Birth of the Cool

PAINTINGS BY BARKLEY HENDRICKS

All images via Nasher Gallery at Duke University. I think i may have shown this artist on my blog a few years back, but I was looking at some images from his 2009 show, Birth of the Cool, a collection of his works from 1964 until the present. The oil paintings are so classically realistic, yet the subjects and his style are incomparable.

These photos dont do the paintings justice, they are absolutely massive, some are larger than life. That last one, at just over 7'x5', almost completely fills your field of vision yet the tiniest details in the texture of the coat can still be recognized. If you ever get a chance to check out this collection in person, go there, and stay for hours.
